In 35 minutes you will calculate it from planned and actual labour cost to date. You will also read the sign: negative is over plan, positive is under. And you will split a variance into hours and rate before deciding what to fix.

Description

Who it’s for: Anyone planning people across projects who needs to know whether the team is stretched or just badly scheduled.

What happens in it: a short film shows plenty of labour budget left, a plan already overspent, and the rand figure on the gap. In Your call you make the decisions in a real case: upgrading a pump station for the Rockbridge Water Authority, on a total labour budget of R1,260,000. The plan expected 3,600 hours of work by the end of this month at a budget rate of R140 an hour: a planned labour cost to date of R504,000. The actual labour cost to date is R546,000. The board wants to know, in rand, whether labour is over or under plan. Then, in the boardroom, you make the case to Isadora, the project manager, in three questions.

How it works: five scenes in about 35 minutes: the data film, the lesson, Your call, practice with fresh numbers that mark themselves, and the boardroom. Finish all five for your certificate. It is course 5 of 5 in the Resources and capacity season of the Project Management series.
