Description
Who it’s for: Anyone who has to show, in money, whether a project was worth doing.
What happens in it: a short film shows R1,200,000 of benefits, an R800,000 fit-out, and what that future money is worth today. In Your call you make the decisions in a real case: preparing the business case for an expansion at Sweetwater Lodges. It costs R3,000,000, paid upfront, and should deliver a net benefit of R800,000 a year for five years. Our finance team requires a 12% return on projects, with discount factors of 0.8929, 0.7972, 0.7118, 0.6355 and 0.5674 for years 1 to 5. The owners point out that R800,000 × 5 = R4,000,000, R1,000,000 more than the cost, and ask me to confirm it is worth it. Then, in the boardroom, you make the case to Leland, the project manager, in three questions.
How it works: five scenes in about 35 minutes: the data film, the lesson, Your call, practice with fresh numbers that mark themselves, and the boardroom. Finish all five for your certificate. It is course 3 of 5 in the Value and benefits season of the Project Management series.
