Description

Who it’s for: Anyone accountable for what gets shipped, who needs to know what rework and defects are really costing.

What happens in it: a short film shows rework that looks small, the costs booked elsewhere, and the share of spending lost to fixing failures. In Your call you make the decisions in a real case: refurbishing the wards of Mercy Ridge Hospital. The project has a total budget of R2,400,000, and its actual cost to date is R2,000,000. The first wards have been handed back to the hospital. Fixing defects found before handover has cost R98,000 in labour and materials. Fixing defects the hospital reported after handover has cost R42,000 in call-outs, parts and travel. We have also spent R35,000 on inspections and infection-control training. The hospital’s operations director asks what poor quality is costing the project. Then, in the boardroom, you make the case to Clementine, the project manager, in three questions.

How it works: five scenes in about 35 minutes: the data film, the lesson, Your call, practice with fresh numbers that mark themselves, and the boardroom. Finish all five for your certificate. It is course 5 of 5 in the Quality season of the Project Management series.
